Asphalt Shingles

From Roofers Wiki

Asphalt shingles are a widely used steep-slope roofing material, especially on residential buildings in North America. They combine relatively low cost with ease of installation and a broad range of colors.

Types[edit]

  • Three-tab shingles — a flat, uniform look with cut tabs
  • Architectural (dimensional/laminated) shingles — a thicker, layered profile that mimics the depth of wood or slate

Construction[edit]

Most modern asphalt shingles are built on a fiberglass mat coated with asphalt and topped with mineral granules. The granules protect against ultraviolet light and add color and surface texture.

Lifespan[edit]

Depending on product quality and climate, asphalt shingles typically last from about 20 to 30 years.
