Roof Ventilation
Appearance
Roof ventilation is the movement of air through the attic or roof cavity. Balanced intake and exhaust ventilation help control heat and moisture, which protects the roof and improves energy efficiency.
Why it matters[edit]
- Reduces heat buildup in summer, lowering cooling costs
- Prevents moisture accumulation that can lead to mold, rot, and damaged insulation
- Reduces the risk of ice dams in cold climates
Common types[edit]
- Ridge vents — continuous exhaust vents along the roof peak
- Soffit vents — intake vents under the eaves
- Gable vents — vents in the gable end walls
- Powered and turbine vents — mechanical or wind-driven exhaust
Balance[edit]
Effective ventilation generally requires roughly equal amounts of intake (soffit) and exhaust (ridge or gable) airflow.
